History of Rajpura

Rajpura town was founded by Akbar famous minister namely Raja Todar Mal. This city finds its mention in the history as founder of the Suri Dynasty, Emperor Sher Shah Suri also known as The Lion King, built a "Sarai" (Inn) in Rajpura for his army and travellers to rest when ever he passed through this city. It was built between 1540 and 1545. This more than 450-years-old Sarai is still stands bold with a portion of it in shambles. It is presently occupied as offices of SDM, Tehsildar and DSP of police. The development of this city occured in three phases. One is Rajpura Township , the second is old Rajpura and third is development surrounding the township and along highways. The development of this town started along the railway line and on both sides of old G.T.Road which is now referred as old abadi. The Rajpura township was built to rehabilitate migrated people from Pakistan province of Bahawalpur. Establishment of Industrial Focal Point, fuel market Industrial Estate in 1963, and Urban Estate in 1970 also helped in the development of this city.

Geography of Rajpura

Rajpura is located at longitude of 30.48°N and latitude of 76.6°E with an average elevation of 259 metres (849 feet). It is located about 38 km away from Chandigarh, the capital city of Punjab and 26 kms away from its district city Patiala. Other major cities like Ambala is situated 22 km away and Ludhiana 80 km away. This city is the centre point between Delhi and Amritsar on NH-1 as both of these cities are located at a distance of 225 km from Rajpura in opposite directions. The total area of Rajpura is 18.26 sq.km. The total population of Rajpura is 92,659 as per 2011 census but after including some villages like islampur, pilkhani, neelpur and dhamoli , within its municipal limits, the population rose to 112,193 with males constituting 53% of the population while females comprise 47% of the total population. The average literacy rate of this city is 81 % which is way above the national literacy rate.

Economy of Rajpura

Rapura is a major industrial town in Punjab. It has the largest grain market in the region and is also the second largest market of Asia, acquiring about 150 acres of area which comprises more than 290 shops.There are many Small Scale Industries in Rajpura and together they have formed a union named Rajpura Small Scale Industries Associations. There are many large-scale industries as well like Bunge India P Ltd, HUL, Alliance Metaliks Integrated Ltd, Siel Chemicals Limited, Sahni Chemicals, Amber Enterprises Limited and many more. L&T has also entred into the power generation segment as a developer. Rajpura is a hub of rice shellers, door closers, biomass briquette machinery, household manufacturers, soap factories, steel works and biscuit machines industry. This town is also known for its quality furniture since 1976 and some of it is even exported to different countries.

Rajpura, the biggest tehsil of Punjab has about 295 villages under its municipal limits. The city can be segregated into three parts.
